One of the most beautiful erotic photographs I’ve ever seen is the first cadre of the scene where she mimics Venus de Milo. In truth, I would be lying if I said I didn’t admire her nudity and sex scenes, but mostly I was captivated by her overall appearance and her powerful presence on screen. The performance by Eva Green in this film is fantastic, and it’s hard to believe it’s her first film role. Every time I watch “The Dreamers”, my movie experience gets stronger as I see references to many famous movies. There is a strong story, a perfect atmosphere, a great soundtrack, and a great sense of detail. Perhaps I don’t want to analyze this movie for fear of spoiling my love for it by analyzing it. Magic cannot be explained, and movie magic cannot be explained. I’ve seen “The Dreamers” many times but have never found the right words to describe and analyze it. I have always loved Bernardo Bertolucci, but with this film, he has bought me for life. While the May 1968 Paris student riots–which eventually shut down most of the French government–are happening around them, the three friends develop a relationship unlike anything Matthew has ever experienced, or will ever encounter again. Matthew, an American exchange student, pursuing his education abroad in Paris, becomes friends with a French brother and sister duo, named Theo and Isabelle, who share a common love of the cinema. The tumultuous political landscape of Paris in 1968 serves as the backdrop for a tale about three young cineastes who are drawn together through their passion for film. Stars: Michael Pitt, Louis Garrel, Eva Green.
